Water & Wells
Nolan County has an active groundwater conservation district
The Wes-Tex Groundwater Conservation District regulates wells and water use in Nolan County — important if you plan to drill a well or buy rural land.
In Nolan County, a special district controls the groundwater under rural land. It is called the Wes-Tex Groundwater Conservation District. The state created it in 2001. Voters confirmed it in 2002. The district sets rules for well permits, pumping limits, and water use in the area.
The district is part of Groundwater Management Area 7. That area covers a large part of West Texas. If you need to drill a new well or move water rights, you will likely need a permit from this district first. Before you buy or build on rural land, contact the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) or the district directly to learn the current rules.
