Homestead Exemption

Homestead exemption can lower your tax bill in Nolan County

If you own and live in your home as your main residence, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that reduces what you owe in property taxes.

A homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of your home. Texas school districts must give a $140,000 exemption on a primary residence. Other local taxing units — like the county or city — can add their own exemption on top of that.

Once you qualify, your appraised value cannot jump more than 10 percent per year under Texas Tax Code Section 23.23. You file the application with the Nolan County Appraisal District. The general deadline is before May 1, but check with the appraisal district because deadlines can change. The Texas Comptroller's page explains all exemption types and has the application form.
