Harris County Has the Largest Concentration of Petrochemical Plants in the U.S.

The area along the Houston Ship Channel grew into the largest concentration of petrochemical manufacturing in the United States.

The Ship Channel opened in 1914. Oil was found nearby not long after. Refineries moved in fast. By 1930, nine oil refineries were running along the channel. After World War II, petrochemical plants followed. By the early 2000s, the Ship Channel corridor held the largest concentration of petrochemical plants in the country.

This history still shapes Harris County today. It drives the local economy and creates air quality challenges. Many of these plants sit close to homes and neighborhoods. If you are buying near the channel, check air quality data at tceq.texas.gov. You can also look up nearby regulated facilities in TCEQ's STEERS database.
