Your Property Tax Bill in Harris County Comes From Several Taxing Units

Your Harris County property tax bill combines rates from several different agencies — the county, your school district, any city, and possibly a MUD or other special district.

HCAD sets one appraised value for your property. Then each taxing unit — like Harris County, your school district, and your city — applies its own rate to that value. The total can be the sum of five or more line items.

If you live in a MUD, add another rate on top. Some properties are served by emergency services districts (ESDs) or other special districts that also add to the bill. The Harris County Tax Office at hctax.net shows all the taxing units for any address and sends the combined bill. Rates change annually — check before assuming what your bill will be.
