Water & Lakes
The Highland Lakes run through the heart of Burnet County
LCRA runs a chain of six lakes on the Colorado River. Four of those lakes sit partly or fully in Burnet County.
The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) built six dams on the Colorado River. Those dams created lakes Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls, Travis, and Austin. Lakes Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, and Marble Falls are in or next to Burnet County. Lake Buchanan and Lake Travis supply water to more than one million people in the region.
If you own land near any of these lakes, LCRA may have rules that affect you. The agency's Highland Lakes Watershed Ordinance covers certain work near the Colorado River in Burnet County. It applies to grading, clearing, and construction that could harm water quality. Before you start any land project near the water, check lcra.org for maps and permit details.
