Septic / OSSF
Septic permits near the Highland Lakes go through LCRA
If your property is within about 2,200 feet of the upper Highland Lakes, LCRA — not the county — issues your septic system permit.
Texas law lets LCRA act as the permitting authority for on-site sewage facilities (OSSF) — commonly called septic systems — in a zone around the Highland Lakes. The goal is to protect water quality in the lakes. In most of Burnet County, the zone is roughly 2,200 feet around the upper lakes.
Before you install, replace, or modify a septic system near a Highland Lake, check whether your lot falls inside LCRA's jurisdiction. Use the OSSF jurisdiction map at lcra.org. If you are inside the boundary, contact LCRA at 512-578-3216 or ossf@lcra.org before doing any work. Outside LCRA's zone, the county or TCEQ rules apply instead.
