Homestead Exemption

How the Homestead Exemption Works in Comal County

If this is your main home, you can apply for a homestead exemption that lowers the taxable value of your property.

Comal County offers a 20% local option homestead exemption. That means if your home is valued at $100,000, the county only taxes $80,000 of that. School districts must give every homeowner at least a $140,000 exemption on school taxes.

To qualify, you must own and live in the home as your main residence. You will need to show proof of ownership and that the home is your principal place of residence. File between January 1 and April 30. Check the Comal Appraisal District website for the current form and any deadline changes.
