Water Supply
Many Rural Properties in DeWitt County Rely on Private Water Wells
Outside city limits in DeWitt County, many homes get their water from private wells — check the state databases before you buy to understand what kind of water supply a property has.
Many rural properties in DeWitt County use private water wells instead of city water. Before you buy, find out about the well. How deep is it? What underground water source, called an aquifer, does it draw from? Was a well log filed with the state?
Texas requires well drillers to file reports. Those records go into a state database. Two state agencies keep them. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) both have online tools. You can search by address or location.
If the property has a well, ask the seller for any records they have. A licensed water well driller or a home inspector who knows rural properties can help you check it out. The official sources listed here are the place to start.
