How to file for a homestead exemption in Atascosa County
If you own and live in your home in Atascosa County, filing a homestead exemption can lower your taxable value and cap how fast it can rise.
Texas has no state property tax. Local taxing units set their own rates. These include Atascosa County, your school district, and any special districts. The Atascosa Central Appraisal District (CAD) figures out what your home is worth for tax purposes.
A homestead exemption cuts a portion of your home's value before taxes are figured. It also caps how much your taxable value can rise each year — the limit is 10 percent. Extra exemptions are available if you are 65 or older or have a disability. All applications need a copy of your Texas driver's license or state ID showing your property address.
File Form 50-114 with the Atascosa CAD — not with the state. The CAD is at 1020 Bensdale Rd. Ste. A, Pleasanton, TX 78064. Forms are on their website. Check the site for current deadlines, since filing windows are set by state law and can change.
