Homestead Exemption
A homestead exemption can lower your property tax bill
Texas law lets homeowners reduce what their home is taxed on if they live there as their main residence.
If your home in Hale County is your main residence, you may qualify for a homestead exemption. School districts must give a set exemption amount on the taxable value of your home under state law. This directly reduces your school property tax.
You apply with the Hale County Appraisal District. There is a general deadline to file, typically before May 1 of the tax year, but check with the district for the current year's deadline. Once approved, the exemption renews each year automatically. Additional exemptions exist for people age 65 and older and for disabled Texans. Visit halecad.org or call 806-293-4226 to get the forms.
