Homestead Exemption Cuts Your Property Tax Bill
If you own and live in your Hood County home, a homestead exemption can lower the value used to calculate your school tax bill by $100,000.
Texas law gives every homeowner a $100,000 reduction off their home's taxable value for school district taxes. This cuts what you owe on your school tax bill every year. Voters approved this amount in 2023.
If you are 65 or older or disabled, you get an extra $10,000 off the school district portion. You also get a tax ceiling — your school taxes cannot rise above a set amount as long as you live there. You must file an application with Hood Central Appraisal District (Hood CAD). The typical deadline is April 30. File as soon as you close on your home.
Hood CAD mails notice of appraised values around April 15 each year. If you disagree with your value, you can protest by May 15 or 30 days after the notice — whichever is later. Hood CAD can be reached at 817-573-2471.
