How to Apply for Your Homestead Exemption in Brazoria County
Homeowners in Brazoria County can reduce their property tax bill by filing a homestead exemption with the Brazoria Central Appraisal District.
If you own and live in your home in Brazoria County as your primary residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption. The state requires the school district portion of your tax bill to reflect a $140,000 reduction in taxable value for most homeowners. Seniors age 65 and older and people with qualifying disabilities can claim additional exemptions, and veterans with a 100% VA disability rating may be fully exempt from property taxes on their primary home.
To qualify, you must own the property and occupy it as your primary residence in the year you apply. Your Texas driver's license or state ID must show the property address. You can apply online, by mail, or in person at the Brazoria Central Appraisal District office at 500 N. Chenango Street in Angleton. Forms are available at brazoriacad.org.
The standard filing deadline is April 30, set by state law (Texas Tax Code §11.43(d)) — check brazoriacad.org to confirm the current year's date and any late-filing provisions. Filing early protects you for the full tax year. The exemption stays in place as long as you live in the home and do not claim one elsewhere in Texas.
