Homestead Exemption

How the homestead exemption works in Sherman County

If your home in Sherman County is your main residence, you may qualify for a Texas homestead exemption that lowers your taxable value.

Texas requires all school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on a residence homestead. That means the school district taxes only the value above $140,000. Other local taxing units — like the county — can add their own exemptions on top of that.

To qualify, the home must be your principal residence and you must own it. You file the application with the Sherman County Appraisal District at 402 N. 3rd St. in Stratford. There is a general filing deadline, so check with SCAD or the Texas Comptroller for the current cutoff. The Comptroller's FAQ page walks through all eligibility rules in plain language.
