Claim a Homestead Exemption to Lower Your Tax Bill

If Anderson County is your primary home, a homestead exemption cuts at least $140,000 from your appraised value for school taxes. You file once with the appraisal district.

Texas law lets school districts subtract $140,000 from your home's appraised value before figuring your school tax. This is called the general residence homestead exemption. It applies statewide, including in Anderson County. You file once and do not need to re-file each year unless something changes.

To claim it, file Form 50-114 with the Anderson County Appraisal District. You must own the home and live in it as your main residence. The usual deadline is before May 1. Confirm the current deadline with the district because it can change.

If you are 65 or older, disabled, or a disabled veteran, extra exemptions may apply. Those can freeze or further cut your school tax. The appraisal district's website is andersoncad.net. It has forms and contact info. The Texas Comptroller's site explains all available exemptions. Filing is free.
