Homestead Exemption

How to Lower Your Tax Bill with a Homestead Exemption

If your home in Hutchinson County is your main residence, you can file for a homestead exemption that reduces the taxable value — which lowers your tax bill.

Texas law requires school districts to exempt at least $140,000 of your home's value from school taxes if you qualify. Other taxing units — the county, city, water district — may offer their own exemptions on top of that. You file once with the Hutchinson County Appraisal District (HCAD), not with each taxing unit separately.

To apply, download the homestead exemption form from hutchinsoncad.org/forms/ and mail it to HCAD at 920 Illinois Ave., Borger, TX 79007. You must include a color copy of your Texas driver's license showing your home's address. The general filing deadline under state law is before May 1, but check the HCAD website or call 806-274-2294 for the current deadline. There are also extra exemptions for people 65 and older and for disabled veterans.
