Lake Meredith: Fishing and Recreation Near Hutchinson County
Lake Meredith, managed by the National Park Service, is near Fritch in Hutchinson County and is known for some of the best walleye fishing in Texas.
Lake Meredith National Recreation Area sits about 45 miles northeast of Amarillo, right in the Hutchinson County area near the town of Fritch. The lake holds walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, and channel and flathead catfish. Texas Parks and Wildlife says walleye fishing here is among the best in the state. Peak walleye season runs roughly April through June.
The park also has 11 campgrounds, hiking trails, boating, and off-road vehicle areas. The National Park Service manages the lake, but you still need a valid Texas fishing license to fish here. Check the TPWD website for current license requirements and any special regulations. The park's phone number is 806-857-3151. Also note: zebra and quagga mussels are a concern — clean, drain, and dry your boat and gear before moving between bodies of water.
