Homestead Exemption: How to Lower Your Tax Bill in Jones County

If Jones County is your main home, a homestead exemption can reduce what you pay in property taxes each year.

Texas lets homeowners exempt part of their home's value from school district taxes. The school district exemption is set by state law; check the Texas Comptroller site for the current amount. Other local taxing units may offer additional exemptions. To get the exemption, you must live at the property as your main home.

You apply through the Jones County Appraisal District — not the state. You can download the form (50-114) from jonescad.org. The general filing deadline is before May 1 of the tax year, but you may be able to file late in some cases. You will likely need to show proof that the property is your main home — check with the appraisal district for exactly what documents are required. Check the appraisal district site for the current deadline before you file.
