Homestead Exemption

A homestead exemption can cut your school tax bill in Kerr County

If your home is your primary residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption that reduces the taxable value of your property.

Texas requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their main home. This means that amount is subtracted from your home's appraised value before your school tax is calculated. Other taxing units in Kerr County, like the county government or emergency service districts, may offer additional exemptions.

To get the exemption, you file with the Kerr Central Appraisal District. The general deadline to apply is April 30 of the tax year. You only have to apply once — it renews automatically as long as you live in the home. The forms are at kerrcad.org under 'Forms.' Check the Texas Comptroller's exemption page for a full list of available exemptions, including those for seniors and disabled homeowners.
