Homestead Exemption
Homestead Exemption Can Lower Your Tax Bill in Hockley County
If your home in Hockley County is your main residence, a homestead exemption removes part of its taxable value and lowers what you owe.
Texas law requires school districts to exempt $140,000 of your home's value from school taxes once you qualify. You must own the home and live in it as your primary residence. You cannot claim the exemption on a second home or a rental.
Homeowners who are 65 or older get an extra $60,000 school district exemption on top of the regular one. A local taxing unit — like the county — may also offer its own optional exemption. You must apply at the Hockley Central Appraisal District. The general filing deadline is before May 1 of the tax year. Rates and local options can change, so confirm current details with the appraisal district at (806) 894-9654.
