Homestead Exemption Lowers Your School Tax Bill

Texas law requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their main home. This can lower the school part of your property tax bill.

A homestead exemption lowers your property tax if Upshur County is your main home. Texas law makes every school district cut $140,000 off your appraised value before figuring your school tax. That means you pay school tax on a lower number.

Homeowners who are 65 or older get an extra $60,000 school exemption on top of that. So do homeowners with a qualifying disability.

You apply once at the Upshur Appraisal District. Use Form 50-114. The general deadline is before May 1. Check with the district for the current year's exact deadline.

The county and city can also offer extra optional exemptions — up to 20 percent of your home's value. Ask the appraisal district what is available in your area.
