Homestead Exemption

Save money with a homestead exemption

If your home is your main residence, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that lowers your property tax bill.

Texas law requires every school district to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their main home. That cuts the taxable value used to figure your school taxes. Other taxing units — like the county or a water district — can add their own exemption on top of that.

To get the exemption, file Form 50-114 with the Van Zandt Appraisal District. You must own the home and use it as your primary residence. Deadlines can change, so check with VZCAD at vzcad.org or call 903-567-6171 for the current filing window.
