Horsehead Crossing on the Pecos River is a historic landmark in Crane County

Horsehead Crossing, on the Pecos River near the county's southern boundary, was a key ford used by cattle drives and travelers heading west in the 1800s.

The Pecos River forms part of Crane County's southern and western boundary. Horsehead Crossing was one of the few places where the river could be forded in this stretch of West Texas. Cattle drives and emigrant wagon trains used it in the mid-to-late 1800s when moving livestock west toward New Mexico and California.

The site is noted in the Handbook of Texas as a landmark of pioneer travel in the Trans-Pecos region. It is not a developed tourist facility, and access may cross private land. If you want to visit, confirm access and land ownership before going. The Texas Historical Commission (thc.texas.gov) maintains records on historical markers in Crane County.
