Hunting on Private Land Is Common in Dickens County

Hunting leases are a big part of the local economy. White-tailed deer are well established here after decades of restocking by TPWD.

White-tailed deer are well established in Dickens County. Texas Parks and Wildlife trapped and released deer here as part of a statewide restocking program. That program ran from 1939 to 1991. Mule deer live in parts of the Panhandle, but TPWD does not list Dickens County as part of their range.

Most hunting here is on private land. You pay a landowner to lease hunting rights. There is very little public hunting land in the county. If you want to hunt, start by looking for a landowner willing to lease. TPWD's Annual Public Hunting Permit opens some public areas across the state. Check the TPWD website to find out the current price. Use their online search tool to see if any permitted areas are near Dickens County. Before you go, look up current seasons and bag limits in the TPWD Outdoor Annual.
