Evacuation Routes
Know Your Evacuation Route Before a Storm Hits
Polk County is inland but sits along major hurricane evacuation corridors from the Texas Gulf Coast, which means local roads can get very congested during a storm.
U.S. Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 190 pass through Polk County. US 59 is a designated evacuation corridor on TxDOT's hurricane evacuation map. US 190 is also a major inland highway used by coastal residents heading north during storms. During a major storm evacuation, traffic on these roads can back up for hours.
TxDOT publishes a statewide hurricane evacuation map that shows primary corridors. If you live in Polk County, knowing your route before storm season — and having fuel and supplies ready — makes a real difference. Check drivetexas.org for real-time road conditions or txdot.gov for the official evacuation map.
