Hurricane Evacuation

Harris County Has Official Hurricane Evacuation Zones

Harris County uses a zip zone system to tell residents when and in what order to evacuate during a hurricane.

The county uses four zones — Coastal, A, B, and C — based on storm surge risk. Coastal zone residents face the greatest danger and evacuate first. Each zone has designated evacuation routes that lead inland away from the Gulf Coast.

TxDOT can activate contraflow on major freeways during a large hurricane. Contraflow makes all lanes on I-10, I-45, US 290, and US 59 flow outbound — away from the coast. Know your zone before hurricane season starts. Check your zone and route at txdot.gov or call 800-452-9292. Real-time road conditions are at drivetexas.org.
