Jim Chapman Lake Is the County's Main Water Reservoir

Jim Chapman Lake on the South Sulphur River sits on the Hopkins-Delta county line and serves both flood control and water supply for the region.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates Cooper Dam on the South Sulphur River, about 12 miles north of Sulphur Springs. The resulting reservoir is Jim Chapman Lake. It provides flood control for the broader Red River basin and supplies water to the North Texas Municipal Water District, the Sulphur River Municipal Water District, and the city of Irving.

The lake is part of the Cooper WMA recreation area, where fishing, boating, and hiking are available. Road flooding near the lake is a known hazard during heavy rain. Check current lake conditions with the TWDB surface water page or the Corps of Engineers before boating.
