Water Supply

Lake Ray Hubbard is a Dallas water supply reservoir, not just a recreation lake

Lake Ray Hubbard was built by the City of Dallas to supply drinking water, and Dallas Water Utilities still owns and operates the dam today.

Construction on Lake Ray Hubbard started in 1964 and finished in 1969. The City of Dallas owns the Rockwall-Forney Dam — an earthfill structure about 12,500 feet long. Dallas Water Utilities operates the lake for municipal water supply and flood control. Recreation is a secondary purpose.

This matters for anyone living on or near the lake. Dallas sets the rules for the lake surface and dam operations. The Texas Water Development Board tracks storage levels. Current reservoir level data is available at waterdatafortexas.org — check there for the latest storage percentage.
