Land Use Rules
A special ordinance controls land use around Ray Roberts Lake
Denton County adopted a Lake Ray Roberts Land Use Ordinance that governs structures and land within 5,000 feet of the reservoir's shoreline.
Ray Roberts Lake supplies drinking water to a large part of the region. To protect that water supply, Denton County created a special land use ordinance for the area around the lake. The rule covers land within 5,000 feet of the lake's shoreline at its take line elevation of 645 feet above mean sea level. Property already inside a city's limits is not covered. The ordinance controls how land in that zone can be divided, what can be built, and what type of septic system is allowed.
If you own or plan to buy land near Ray Roberts Lake, this ordinance may limit what you can do with it. It can affect how close you build to the water and what kind of sewage system you use. Call Denton County Development Services at 940-349-2990 to check the current rules before you buy or build.
