Las Palomas WMA offers free public hunting and hiking

The Las Palomas Wildlife Management Area has units in Starr County and is open year-round for hiking, wildlife viewing, and public hunting with the right permit.

Las Palomas WMA is managed by TPWD and spans multiple Lower Rio Grande Valley counties, including Starr. The WMA is divided into units, some of which are open to the public for daytime hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, and hunting. The area is known for native brush habitat and wildlife typical of the South Texas border region.

Anyone 17 or older must carry an Annual Public Hunting (APH) Permit or Limited Public Use (LPU) Permit to enter. Daily registration is required through the Texas Hunt and Fish App. There are no restrooms or drinking water on site, so bring your own. Some units close during drawn hunting seasons.
