The LBJ National Grasslands Offer Trails, Camping, and Hunting Near Decatur
The Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands in Wise and Montague counties provide free public access for hiking, horseback riding, camping, and hunting.
The LBJ National Grasslands are managed by the U.S. Forest Service and sit in Wise and Montague counties north of Decatur. The grasslands have nearly 75 miles of multipurpose trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Several campgrounds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Hunting is allowed on the grasslands. Deer, dove, turkey, and small game seasons follow standard Texas regulations, but antlerless deer on USFS land in the area may only be taken during archery, youth-only, and special doe-day seasons — not during the main general season. The local USFS office at (940) 627-5475 can answer questions and sell passes.
