Mason Mountain WMA Offers Public Hunting by Permit

Texas Parks and Wildlife manages Mason Mountain Wildlife Management Area in Mason County, offering public hunting opportunities through a permit system.

Mason Mountain WMA sits in the Llano Uplift area of the Hill Country. The area is not open to casual drop-in visits. Hunting is the primary permitted activity, and access requires either a drawn permit through the Texas Public Hunting drawn-hunt system or an Annual Public Hunting Permit for dove season. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, quail, and javelina are among the native species. The area also hosts exotic species — including Scimitar-horned Oryx — as part of research and management programs.

Mason County's general deer season runs from late November through early January, with an archery-only season in late September and October. The bag limit is 5 deer per season, no more than 2 bucks. Check the current season dates and special rules at tpwd.texas.gov — seasons and bag limits can change year to year. Contact the WMA directly at (325) 347-5037 for site-specific questions. Bring drinking water; no restroom facilities are on site.
