Water Supply
The Ogallala Aquifer Supplies Most Water Here — and It Is Shrinking
Most water in Moore County — for homes, farms, and industry — comes from the Ogallala Aquifer, a deep underground source that is slowly shrinking.
The Ogallala Aquifer runs under most of the Texas Panhandle, including Moore County. Farmers rely on it to water their crops. A large share of Moore County farmland is irrigated from Ogallala wells.
The problem is that water is pumped out much faster than rain can put it back. Water levels have been dropping for decades and will keep dropping.
This matters if you are buying land or a home outside city limits. Wells on rural property draw from the Ogallala. Before you buy, ask how deep the well is. Then check recent water level data from the Texas Water Development Board, which tracks the aquifer over time.
