Oil and gas activity in Coleman County is regulated by the RRC

Coleman County has a history of oil and gas production, and the Texas Railroad Commission regulates all wells and operators here under District 7B.

Oil was discovered in Coleman County around 1917. Production peaked in the 1950s and early 1960s. If you buy land here, the mineral rights — the right to oil, gas, and other minerals underground — may or may not come with the surface land. In many areas of Texas, a previous owner already sold them off separately.

The Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) oversees all oil and gas drilling and production in the state. Coleman County falls under RRC District 7B, served by the Abilene office. You can look up well records, permits, and active operators on the RRC website. If you have questions about a lease or royalty payment, the RRC does not handle those disputes — you would need a lawyer for that.
