Mineral Rights
Oil and Gas Are a Big Part of Gray County's Economy
Gray County has produced oil and gas since the 1920s, so if you buy land here, mineral rights and Railroad Commission activity are things to check.
A major oil discovery near Pampa in 1926 changed Gray County fast. Since then, the county has produced over 672 million barrels of petroleum, according to the Texas State Historical Association. Oil and petrochemicals are still a big part of the local economy today.
If you buy rural land here, ask whether mineral rights come with it. Mineral rights are often sold apart from surface rights. The Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) is the state agency that regulates all oil and gas activity in Texas. Gray County is in RRC District 10. The district office is in Pampa. On the RRC website, you can look up active wells, permits, and production data for land you are thinking about buying.
