A Groundwater District Regulates Water Wells in Gray County

Gray County is inside the Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District, which means drilling or using a well here requires following district rules.

The Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District was created by the Texas Legislature in 1955. It covers all of Gray, Carson, Donley, Roberts, and Wheeler counties, plus parts of nearby counties. The district's job is to manage underground water. Farmers, ranchers, and rural homeowners all depend on that water.

If you plan to drill a well in Gray County, contact the district first. You will likely need to register the well. The district sets rules on how far apart wells must be, how much water you can pump, and how the well must be built. The Texas Water Development Board lists the district and its plans on its groundwater page.
