In East Texas, the surface and mineral estates are often owned by different people. When you buy land in Upshur County, you may not own the oil, gas, or other minerals underneath it. Always ask a title company to clarify what mineral rights — if any — transfer with a purchase.
The Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) regulates oil and gas drilling and production statewide. Upshur County falls under RRC District 6, headquartered in Henderson. The RRC's public GIS viewer lets you see well locations and lease data for any Texas county at rrc.texas.gov.
