Oil and Gas Wells in Hopkins County Are Regulated by the RRC

If you own land or are buying rural property in Hopkins County, the Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) regulates any oil, gas, or water-disposal wells on or near the property.

Hopkins County falls under RRC District 5, with the Henderson office. The RRC issues drilling permits, tracks well locations, and regulates production. If there are active or abandoned wells on land you are buying, you can look them up on the RRC's public database before closing.

Mineral rights in Texas can be sold separately from surface rights. You may own the surface but not the minerals below. Check the deed carefully and ask a title company to search the mineral history. The RRC website has a free drilling-permit and well-location search tool.
