Part of Palo Duro Canyon State Park Lies in Armstrong County
Palo Duro Canyon State Park, known as the Grand Canyon of Texas, spans Randall and Armstrong counties. It offers hiking, camping, horseback riding, and a limited draw hunt.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park's entrance is at 11450 Park Road 5, Canyon, TX 79015. The park covers both Randall and Armstrong counties. It is roughly 28,000 acres and is known as the second largest canyon in the country. The canyon reaches about 800 feet deep from rim to floor.
The park has more than 30 miles of hiking and mountain bike trails. You can also go horseback riding, do car touring, backpack camp, and join ranger-led programs. Lodging options include campsites with water and electricity, tent sites, equestrian sites, rim cabins, and canyon-floor Cow Camp cabins. The park fills up on busy weekends. Book in advance through the TPWD reservation system.
TPWD also runs a limited draw hunt inside the park for exotic animals, including aoudad (Barbary sheep) and feral hogs. TPWD describes the aoudad hunt as extremely physically demanding. Check the TPWD public hunt drawing program each year for current season dates and deadlines, since they change annually.
