The Paluxy River floods quickly — low-water crossings close without warning
The Paluxy River rises fast after rain, cutting off rural roads at low-water crossings in and around Glen Rose.
Somervell County is bisected by the Paluxy River. Many rural roads in the county cross the river at low spots called low-water crossings. These crossings can become impassable quickly when the river rises after heavy rain. Even a few inches of fast-moving water can sweep a vehicle off a crossing.
NOAA and USGS both monitor the Paluxy at Glen Rose. If you live or own property near the river, know where the nearest high-water crossing is as an alternate route. Never drive around a barricade at a flooded crossing. Check current river levels at the USGS gauge before heading out after rain. For property buyers, ask whether any road access crosses the Paluxy or a tributary — flooding could limit when you can reach your land.
