The Playa Lakes WMA near Dimmitt offers public waterfowl and pheasant hunting
Texas Parks and Wildlife manages a public hunting unit near Dimmitt where licensed hunters can apply for drawn waterfowl and pheasant hunts at no cost.
The Playa Lakes Wildlife Management Area includes a Dimmitt Unit in Castro County. It is managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Hunters can apply for drawn hunts targeting waterfowl — mallards, geese, and sandhill cranes — as well as pheasant. The draws are free. Groups of one to four hunters apply together. Shotguns with non-toxic shot are required; lead shot and slugs are prohibited.
You need a valid Texas hunting license, appropriate stamps, and either an Annual Public Hunting Permit or a drawn special permit. Access is limited, so you must contact the area manager before your visit. Registration on-site is also required. Check the TPWD website for current season dates and to apply for a drawn hunt permit. Season dates and rules can change each year.
