Groundwater Planning
Wise County Is in a Priority Groundwater Management Area
State regulators have flagged the Wise County area as having groundwater supply concerns because of heavy regional demand.
Texas has labeled the Northern Trinity and Woodbine aquifer region — which includes Wise County — a Priority Groundwater Management Area (PGMA). That label means state agencies see a real risk to long-term water supply in the area.
Local Groundwater Conservation Districts manage how much water people can pump. They can require permits for new wells and set limits on how much you can draw. This matters if you plan to drill a new well or use a lot of water on rural land.
Check with TCEQ or the Texas Water Development Board to find out which district, if any, covers the property you are looking at. Water supply is a real concern for large rural tracts in this part of North Texas.
