Property Tax Basics
Jefferson County Has Two Separate Property Tax Offices
The Jefferson County Appraisal District sets your property value, while the Tax Assessor-Collector handles billing and payment — these are two different offices with different phone numbers.
When you get a property tax bill in Jefferson County, two offices are involved. The Jefferson County Appraisal District (JCAD) decides what your property is worth for tax purposes. The Tax Assessor-Collector then uses that value to calculate what you owe and collects the money. Many people confuse the two.
If you think your value is too high, you dispute it with JCAD, not the Tax office. JCAD is at 4610 S. Fourth St. in Beaumont and can be reached at 409-840-9944 or through jcad.org. The Tax Assessor-Collector is at 1149 Pearl St., also in Beaumont, at 409-835-8516 or jeffcotax.com. The county has 35 active taxing units — meaning your bill may include charges from the county, a school district, a city, and several special districts all at once.
