Windstorm Certificate

Buying a Coastal Home? Ask About the WPI-8 Certificate

Homes in Jefferson County built or modified after 1987 generally need a WPI-8 windstorm compliance certificate to qualify for TWIA coverage — missing one can block insurance or slow a sale.

A WPI-8 is a certificate issued by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) or TWIA. It confirms that a home was inspected during construction and meets windstorm building codes. Without it, TWIA may not insure the property.

If you are buying a home in Jefferson County and you need windstorm coverage, ask for the WPI-8 before closing. If one was never issued, getting retroactive coverage can be complicated and expensive. Sellers, builders, and licensed inspectors can provide more information. Check tdi.texas.gov or twia.org for official guidance on the certificate process.
