The site is near Sabine Pass in Jefferson County. It marks the spot where 47 Confederate soldiers stopped a Union invasion in September 1863. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has run it since January 2008. Before that, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department managed it.
The grounds hold a bronze statue of Lt. Dick Dowling and a memorial to Union casualties. The property also has four historic munitions magazines left over from its use as a coastal artillery battery in World War II.
Eight THC historical markers on the site were damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008. They were later restored and put back in place.
