Septic Systems
Rural Properties in Wise County Need a Septic Permit
If your Wise County property is not on a public sewer, you need a county permit before installing or changing a septic system.
Homes outside city sewer service use a septic system. The official name is an On-Site Sewage Facility, or OSSF. In unincorporated Wise County, the county Public Works office issues the permits. You must get an approved plan and permit before you install or change any septic system.
Some homes use an aerobic septic system. This type uses an air pump and is more complex than a standard system. If you have an aerobic system, you must have an ongoing maintenance contract with an approved company. Contact Wise County Public Works for local deadlines on submitting that contract.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) sets the statewide rules for all septic systems under Title 30 of the Administrative Code, Chapter 285. Check the TCEQ and Wise County websites for current requirements.
