Septic and Well Rules for Rural Houston County Properties
Most rural Houston County lots rely on private wells and septic systems, both of which require permits and follow state rules.
Outside Crockett and other small towns, most homes use a private water well and an on-site sewage facility (OSSF) — what most people call a septic system. Texas requires a permit to build, alter, or repair a septic system. The permitting authority is either the county or a local government. Where no local authority exists, TCEQ is in charge. Check with Houston County or TCEQ before any septic work.
Wells must be at least 50 feet from a septic system and farther from fuel storage. Houston County does not appear to have its own groundwater conservation district, but state rules still apply. Use the TCEQ Water Well Report Viewer online to look up existing well records before you dig.
