If you rent out a home on Airbnb or a similar platform inside the City of Denton, you must register it with the city. You renew that registration every calendar year. You also must collect the city's hotel occupancy tax and pay it each month. Rule changes that took effect in 2025 added new requirements for rentals in areas zoned for homes or apartment buildings.

As of mid-2026, unincorporated Denton County has no county-wide short-term rental rule. Each city sets its own rules. If your rental is in a suburb like Flower Mound, Frisco, or Little Elm, check that city's code. STR rules vary widely across the county.
