County Seat

Sinton Became the County Seat After the Railroad Arrived

Sinton was founded in the 1880s along a new railroad line and became the county seat in 1894, replacing the original settlement of San Patricio.

The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway built through the county in 1886. Col. George W. Fulton of the Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company donated 640 acres along the rail line for a new townsite. The town was named for David Sinton, who was a majority stockholder in the company. Sinton officially became the county seat on June 23, 1894.

Oil found near Sinton on Easter Sunday 1935 by Plymouth Oil Company brought another wave of growth. By the mid-20th century, Sinton was a center for farming, petroleum, and petrochemical industries. Today it is home to the county courthouse and most county offices.
