Tarleton State University Has Been in Stephenville Since 1899

Tarleton State University is based in Stephenville. It is part of the Texas A&M System and has shaped the county's economy and culture for over a century.

Tarleton State University traces its roots in Stephenville to 1893, when a predecessor college was founded there. Classes at John Tarleton College — named for the rancher who endowed it — began in 1899 after an early suspension. It is now part of the Texas A&M University System.

The university is well known for its agriculture programs. Over the years it has grown into a multi-campus school. It now has a presence in Fort Worth as well.

TSU is one of the biggest employers in Erath County. If you are moving to Stephenville, the university affects the local economy, housing prices near campus, and what events happen in town.

The university also has an on-campus planetarium. It is open to the public for regular shows.

For more on TSU's history and role in the county, see the TSHA Handbook of Texas entry linked in the sources.
