Timber Is Still a Major Industry in Polk County

Polk County is one of Texas's top timber-producing counties, and pine forests cover much of the land.

Pine and hardwood forests cover a large share of Polk County. Timber has been central to the local economy since the railroad arrived in 1881. According to the TSHA Handbook of Texas, Polk County led the state in timber production in 1981, with 38.4 million cubic feet cut, mostly pine.

If you are buying rural land in Polk County, you may encounter land under timber management. That can affect how the land looks, how it is used, and whether it qualifies for a special ag or timber appraisal for property tax purposes. National forests in the surrounding region add to the heavily wooded character of East Texas.
